Changing my station name

Hello,
Our local (small town) airport must have quit sending data to WU, so I joined two other stations in the area and put a new weather station on the air.

The station is working great. The data shows up on WU and all is well, except for one thing. I can't change my station name. The station name is defaulting to our town name. I want to include my ham radio call sign in my station name, but it doesn't update on WU. On the devices page, I can edit the station to whatever I want, and it shows that in the devices pages, but then on the map, it still only shows "[Townname] Station". I wondered if it had to be manually approved, but that was a couple weeks ago and it still doesn't match what I have in the device page.

I emailed support on April 6th and got an automated response:

Thank you for taking the time to write to us. Our team has received your email and will be reviewing it shortly.
Case #1291442

No human response and it's now the 16th. I bumped it again with another email a few days ago, got another automated response, but no human reply. Is WU support still active?

Is there something else I have to do to be able to change my station name?

Thanks

Hi, Bassgeek.

I am the human.  Hi!

In your case it may be that because you're trying to use a special character (the non-standard zero), the system is disallowing the change to be presented on the page.  I don't know that for sure, and I will check, but this is going to be a relatively low priority question in the problems queue.

Thanks or the reply, Victoria.

I tried removing any special characters, spaces, and using nothing but plain text and it still doesn't change on the map or station listings. I have other ham friends that are using the slash zero Ø in their station name without issue?.?.

Well I'm not sure then what the purpose is in not allowing us to name our stations.  It can't be the issue of accuracy since the location is the searchable feature.  Station name is not.  Our station names for many is for clarification.  Can you imagine every station in this area of Fenton being named Fenton?  It just doesn't make any sense.  Almost all the others in this area, unless it has a family name, can ID a station by station name to it's location in the area.  Especially since my city name covers two counties and a small municipality which is called Fenton, but the Fenton zip code covers a much larger footprint.  I have no idea where WU adds clarification.  Prior to having a weather station I monitored a local Fenton weather station.  I chose it because it was identified with a station name that belonged to a local landscaper who was a block from my house.  That's the value of allowing the owner of the station to choose their own name.  At this point you might as well pull out the station name feature since it for many will be superfluous.

I completely agree. I just replaced my station and thought it was just a glitch that it wouldn't accept my station name. Now I see that is intentional. Even in a small, rural town like mine (Mountainair, New Mexico) there are many far-flung stations. People want to know which one is closest to them. FYI, my station is KNMMOUNT26 and the name I chose is my local geographical feature, Red Bluff.
Please tell us you are going to reconsider this change!
Thank you, Deborah

As I have said in many different places, the hope is to bring it back.  There is, however, no timeline for that at present.

In no way can removing the station name be a feature. Please advise as to when the station name will be coming back. Thx

Oh yeah ,my little town of Pagosa Springs, CO already has three stations named the same. My proposed name "The Golf Clubhouse" would be very informative to prospective golfers. Having all new stations named the same adds no value.

If the issue is WU "policing" the station names to make sure they are not "undesirable" what if you added a "report" button next to the name? That takes the pressure of WU and lets the public police the names by reporting the few bad apples.

Seems to me that would make everyone happy .... WU would then only have to respond to a few reports, and station owners (the ones who provide your data) could decide how they want their own stations displayed.

Well, at least I know what's going on now. I'm a relatively new member and couldn't figure out why members near me had personalized names and I couldn't figure out why I was having difficulty changing my station name to make it more localized. At least tell new members it's not an option.

Well that answers my question, I just updated my station and lost my name. I'm also a ham, and get questioned all the time... Did you take your satation off the air? This is kind of disapointing.

I echo Dobie Hoffman's comment....  Just replaced my old inoperable station and now my old station ID is gone....  The inability to name a station based on local geographical references that locals would recognize is not helpful to the public........   Please restore the ability of the station owner to name their own station...

And evidently WU is pulling the public name from OpenStreetMap - in my case, the public name it has decided to name my station is based on an erroneous entry on OpenStreetMap. Someone decided to note their neighborhood as a separate town, so OSM and WU think all the neighborhoods within a 15 mile radius are in that fictional 'town.' It would be easy if I could just name the station myself, but I've had to go in and try to correct the error in OSM and hope that it properly populates MapBox for WU. WU, you're asking people to contribute to your business model by making their data available - why are you creating more work and headache for us?

Yeah, I took my ball and went home over this (not that IBM cares). After 15 years on WU, I'm expected to be a 2nd class user.

I agree this is a bunch of crap! I am considering withdrawing my sensor from WU.   Hey WU support is a two way street. We support WU and you support us but to tell us we are not important enough to be head and helped is a deal buster for me.

Forget WU.  They have gone "BIG" and don't give a crap about a single one of you.  There are plenty of good weather information providers that would more than love to have you... FREE and responsive to boot.

Was this resolved? I also would like to name my station with a meaningful name and cannot figure out how to do it.

Hi, Maresch!

There are two names for each station:  one that is given by its owner, and one that is used on the forecast page.  This second one is generated by an algorithm; that name cannot be changed.  The first is displayed on the station’s dashboard, and is under the owner’s control.  It can be edited from the owner’s My Devices page.

We are trying to balance the needs and desires of those who want their station to be locally recognizable with those who want to be able to tell the locality of the station.  There are also those who are concerned about their privacy.

Thank you for being part of the Weather Underground community!

At least in my case the balance is off. There are several weather stations around Monticello, FL. Mine is outside of town located at the astronomical observatory. Naming it for the town (and not the one which actually is in town) is just plain misleading. Thanks for trying!

I am very disappointed there are many stations in my area that have names that identify their specific location and I am unable to do that. Under my devices I am able to edit the name to whatever I want but that is useless because I know where my own weather station is located. It would be very helpful for others to be able to see my specific location instead of just knowing my station is in a particular zip code which covers hundreds of not thousands of square miles.

I have just registered my station with WU (5-01-2020);  and I also wanted to have my station properly identified by a more accurate geographical name not Barrie Ward Six.  I am sure people in this town have no clue where ward six is.  so what is the point?????

I agree. The new auto naming algorithm is just not good enough and is misleading. WU go back to the future.

WEATHER UNDERGROUND PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM! Sharing accurate weather data for very specific locations is what these personal weather stations is all about! Otherwise users are just as well off viewing their local airports weather data because there is no way for them to identify where all of these available stations are located. LET US NAME OUR STATIONS WHAT WE FEEL IS THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE NAME FOR LOCAL VIEWERS!!!!!

I live in a town in the mountains with vastly different elevations and micro climates.  Having the station name of the town is decidedly unhelpful.  I lost my customized station name when replacing a failed pws. Please bring back user edited names!
