I have recently signed up for access for your API for personal use with an excel file. When I use the Webservice function with the link below the formula does not call the current conditions and the call stops at <longitude. Any ideas?

Hi, sorry for question but it seems in the original post the WEBSERVICE function call you're using in your formula is missing. Can you try to edit or reply by embedding it again?

You can mask your api key from url.

Looks like the problem depends on the used software, since under LibreOffice I wasn't able to reproduce any issue

Don't know if can be applied to your scenario, but you can try grabbing data of interest using xml path and FILTERXML like
=FILTERXML(WEBSERVICE("http://api.wunderground.com/api/__YOUR_KEY_HERE__/conditions/q/02653.xml");"/response/current_observation/temperature_string")
