I got the e-mail today (12/12/2018). This is ridiculously late in the day. Is it a prequel to kicking the api concept into touch?

The wording seems familiar, I suspect it was lifted from a previous post or email.
Makes me wonder if this was the message that should have been sent?
I guess it's fine to say, we are working on a plan when there's months to go, just a little hard to believe no one has worked it out so close, and with the seasonal holidays.

Wait, what?

This wording should sound familiar, as the emails were sent out more than a month ago, and are identical to the post on this site from 3 months ago.  I have no idea why anyone would be getting them today.

There's going to be an update any second now, as soon as the one person who has the authorization to post announcements to the site does so.

I'm sorry about that, TMaster.  We did everything we could to communicate with those who are using their keys.  Some keys have no email address, or non-functional email addresses.  At least you found us here!

Has anything been announced? Ca. 432000 seconds have passed since Wednesday last week.
I want to start working on an integration to use my own PWS data and now neither can I use the old API nore use something new. Unfortunayely my PWS only connects to Wunderground, so there isn't much choice.

Hi Victoria

I think someone was probably preparing for the imminent email and has accidentally resent a previous one.
Awaiting the news with interest.

Shouldn't be.  Completely separate things.  Hmm.

I found out that the email that just went out was for those people whose email addresses needed human intervention, e.g., @gmai.com, @gmail.con, etc etc.  So if you just got an email, the one thing I can tell you for sure is that your email address in the key is garbled somehow.

David, I'm very sorry that you're just hearing this now.  The post has been up on the Forum for months, and we've been trying to send out emails for the past two months as well.

But since I don't want to cause you unnecessary stress, the new information will include that the WU API is not closing down until February 2019.  So it's not quite as bad as it sounds.

Hopefully Tim can get the full details in here soon!

Like the original poster I am interested in a "non-commercial personal use, low call volume API".
I have just spent the last week programming an arduino to download and display local weather conditions for personal use. I would hate to think that I wasted the time!
At a request rate of up to 2 an hour it is certainly not a commercial setup.
A simple web search reveals several free api services. If I had received a more timely e-mail I would have coded for one of those.
It is to be hoped that you can accomodate weather enthusiasts with a relevent free service!

As of this moment, we do not anticipate offering free access to the Weather Underground API for anyone except PWS owner/uploaders.

The Weather Company offers limited-time-length trial keys for their paid subscriptions.  For more information, see http://biz.weather.com/WU-Data-API_Data-Package-Demo-Request.html

We again thank everyone who has been part of using Weather Underground as the old API comes to an end, and wish everyone the best in their future endeavors.

This is an extremely crazy suicide plan.
You are pretty much out of the game for all users, then. Personal and professional ones.
People developed hardware and WU related firmware and then distributed it to friends or even sold them to customers.
All these microcontroller based devices out will die from your change. All suppliers of the devices experience a damage in reputation.
They will look for a better data source and never use WU again. Especially if you announce to stop the service without a serious and working replacement at the same time, but later. The time gap is bad.
I am a private user, and made an esp8266 based dotmarix LED info terminal for certain data around the house also using your service. I can change my firmware as I have it here. But paying customers will receive complaints about their products stop working from your change.

Same here Why should we even submit our data to a company that does not allow aps to be made.  This is not propriety data WU created its PD data and data from PWS stations. IBM knew this was not a commercial website when they bought the company whats the deal. It doesn't sound like IBM understands what they bought.

We dont want to just get the data ourselves free we want the data to be in free apps so others locally can use the data we submit. Without that no reason to submit our data. If the data is going to be sold ONLY then we need to be paid for submitting.

I write software so PWS stations can repost the data to CWOPS the end users enter there own API key. MY API key is used in 1 time in setup its in no way overloading any server.   Looks like I will have to switch to scraping the web page to get the data I need now.  I have received no emails.

I have noticed that we can no longer add a status comment to our WU page and we can no longer edit bad data from our page.

In my area LA the MADDIS injest system has not worked in the past year so we dont even get the GOV stations displayed on WU. Complaints go unanswered if you can find a place to complain.

No wonder WU support was dropped from KODI and all the WU aps have been removed from the app stores.

You really think people will keep submitting data when it cant be used by family and friends in free apps. When people optout you will have no data to sell because your MADIS INjest system s broken and you have no PD gov data.

Yes.  I get email from many many people who are comfortable going forward.  Not all users are the same.  I'm sorry this is affecting you so strongly, but for others, it's nothing at all.

If you want to email me directly with the issues you're having with your PWS and the web site, I can make sure it finds its way to the proper people.  If you do, please be sure to include details such as the PWS ID, the browser you're using, etc.  Make sure you've clear cache and ensured the browser is up-to-date as well.

I received two emails in November but not the most recent one.

Count me in with those that are extremely disappointed that there will be no non-commercial API access, especially after being told that one would be offered.

I interpret this as a strong message that IBM cares little about the community that made WU what it is today. Hopefully there's another service that can replicate the same model WU did, at which point I'd expect the PWS owners to move as well. Sad!

"The most recent one" was just a resending of the same earlier one, to people whose email addresses were incomplete/flawed.

But in any case, I wish you well in all your future endeavors.

The email I received on November 14 states that "For developers who use WU API data for non-commercial purposes, you will have access to a new plan for a personal use, low call volume API. Stay tuned for more details as we build this out." which seems to contradict your comment in this thread a week ago, "As of this moment...".

Did I miss other comms stating this change of course?

The email you received in November is the same as the announcement posted on this forum 3 months ago:  https://apicommunity.wunderground.com/weatherapi/topics/end-of-service-for-the-weather-underground-a...

The answers are evolving.  I am hoping there will be more information available publicly after the first of the year.

How do I get on the email list?  I use my API access and also contribute data with a PWS.  My email is correct in my wunderground profile.

The email still says "continue to work though 12/31/2018" but it also claims:
For developers who use WU API data for non-commercial purposes, you will
have access to a new plan for a personal use, low call volume API. Stay tuned for more details as we build this out.

When will this new non-commercial API be available?
