End Of Feb. WU API update

Hey there,

We're checking in with you as we proceed through the final stages of the Weather Underground API retirement.

On March 4, 2019, all keys not connected to a personal weather station will be turned off.

- Keys have been reduced to developer level.  This minimizes the number of API calls that can be made.

- Keys connected to Personal Weather Stations remain protected as we continue to direct PWS owners to the replacement API's key generation portal

- The replacement API documentation is here.

We've tried our absolute best to reach you all, but if you still need to transition to a different Weather Company API package, please head here to work with a rep and finalize those arrangements.

If you have any specific questions, please contact Victoria Gardner (victoria.gardner@ibm.com) for individual attention.

We are incredibly grateful for your support and patience during this transition; thank you for being a part pf the Weather Underground community.

All the best,

The Weather Underground API Transition Team

If you have a personal weather station that uploads to Weather Underground and have been waiting to get a key for the new API, here are the instructions.

Please note that if you do NOT download data from the Weather Underground API, you probably don't need a key.  Uploading data to Wunderground from your PWS is not the same thing.

****

Dear PWS uploaders, thank you for your continued loyalty and patience!

The gateway for the new API keys for PWS uploaders is open.

Cut and paste this URL into your browser:  https://www.wunderground.com/member/api-keys

If you are not logged in, you will be asked to.  The system will also verify that you have a PWS uploading to the system.

You will then see a blank box below “Your API keys”.  Agree to the new Terms and Conditions by clicking in the small box next to “I agree”, click on the blue “GENERATE” box, and your new key will be created.

The key will be masked on the screen, but you can use the “Show” link below the box to see it.  There is also another blue box, which, when clicked, copies the key to your clipboard.

If you have any problems, log out and log back in again.  If that does not resolve the problem, please email me at victoria.gardner@ibm.com.

Next, once you have your new key, you can use it in the NEW (not old!) API’s commands.  The documentation for those commands is here:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eKCnKXI9xnoMGRRzOL1xPCBihNV2rOet08qpE_gArAY/edit

The new API should work immediately once you have the new key in the new commands.

Remember that the new keys work on the new API only, and the old keys work on the old API only.

Old API keys that are associated with a PWS will be kept working until March 22, 2019.  However, that will be the very last day for those API keys to work, so you should transition as quickly as you can to the new API.

For anyone struggling with getting a key, from one of the intrepid group of never-give-up PWS uploaders:

"Using Firefox, we tried the "normal" method and it failed. I had him try Chrome in Incognito Mode and he was able to generate a key."

Yes, wasn't working in Firefox but was able to generate a key on the 2nd attempt in Chrome (not even in incognito mode).

I acquired a key (using Chrome) and finished development of the replacement WU-forecast PHP script, now called WC-forecast.php.

In the email I got sent it had a line "For developers who use WU API data for non-commercial purposes, you will have access to a new plan for a personal use, low call volume API."

Is this still in the works? I have a small script I use at home, maybe 3 calls per day on average, max maybe 10, maybe. I might need 100/day for the first week or so to learn and test the new API, but after that 10/day should be enough.

Am I just out of luck, or is this coming eventually, or is it already around I just can't find it?

Hi, Brian.

As of this moment, we do not anticipate offering free access to the replacement API for anyone except PWS owner/uploaders.

The Weather Company offers limited-time-length trial keys for their paid subscriptions.  For more information, see http://biz.weather.com/WU-Data-API_Data-Package-Demo-Request.html

We again thank everyone who has been part of using Weather Underground as the old API comes to an end, and wish everyone the best in their future endeavors.

Hello Victoria, According to the documentation, I should be able to generate and use my new API right away. I generated a New API then went to the new documentation and copied one of the sample URLs to test out a forecast with my new API key entered but I always get the following error message:
Access DeniedYou don't have permission to access "http://api.weather.com/v3/wx/forecast/daily/7day?"; on this server.
Reference #18.adcf180.1552318389.1bd03ee5

I've been reporting my PWS for quite awhile and use the API for my own personal weather widget on my phone. Thanks.

So close!

The PWS API actually doesn't have access to 7-day forecasts, only 5-day.  The documentation was written for the regular API, so it's a little confusing for those looking at it for the PWS API.

If you replace 7day with 5day everything should work.

If not, please let me know, either here or directly to my email.

I just retrieved my new API key. But is is not working with PVOutput.org.  All I get is this response:

{
  "response": {
  "version":"0.1",
  "termsofService":"http://www.wunderground.com/weather/api/d/terms.html",
  "features": {
  }
		,
	"error": {
		"type": "keynotfound"
		,"description": "this key does not exist"
	}
	}
}

You can't use the new key in old calls.  The new API is www.weather.com/.....

If I'm not understanding correctly, please post the call with your key removed and we can debug.  Or email it to me and we can debug in private.

I don't make the call.  PVOutput.org makes the call.  I am trying to get an answer from them whether they are supporting the new API keys yet.  They worked on the old API key.

Victoria, I have updated my api calls to the new api however note there are no attribution guidelines for the new service.  Is it still called 'Weather Underground' or is it now known by a different name? What is the attribution text and or icon that will be required to be displayed?

If you're branding, use the WU icon, please.

Let me verify a forever name.

Hi, is there no current weather icon in the PWS API?  We used to get an icon URL in the old API and a link to the PWS URL for users to click into for a more graphical view if desired.  However, I can't see this in the "Current Conditions" API and want to avoid doing another call to the forecast API simply to get an image.

Are there any plans to introduce this or is this only going to be available in the forecast API?
