Forecast and Conditions not agreeing with other apps and sources.

I have users who complain that my app conditions and forecast do not match with other apps or the NOAA.gov forecast. My hunch is this is due to other sources not using PWS and perhaps only using the nearby Airports. Is this what could be happening? Is there a way for me to query forecast and weather w/o using the nearest PWS?

Agree. The "BestForecast" is *commonly and routinely* inaccurate.

I would like to get the forecast from the NWS NDFD forecast instead of the BestForecast from the API.

I cannot rely on the Wunderground proprietary "BestForecast" to be accurate.

Please allow the API to source the NWS NDFD for the forecast.

Example:

Text forecast for 76063, Wunderground API:

"Mostly cloudy in the morning, then partly cloudy. High of 90F. Breezy. Winds from the North at 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 30 mph."

No north winds. The NWS NDFD correctly indicates SOUTH wind. This true for all of the North Texas area "BestForecast" data.

Same result on the website: "BestForecast" is incorrect. Turn off "BestForecast" to get the NDFD forecast, and it is correct.

This anomaly is affecting all North TX areas today on Wunderground.

Hello Fizhoo and Moshen,

Ick, sorry to hear about these problems.

That wind issue is not good at all, and appears to be a bug since BestForecast uses _only_ NDFD data as wind input. That is, the wind from the NDFD should match BestForecast winds, clearly there is a mistake.

With that said, what other issues are you seeing with forecasts? Our system is currently verifying better than NDFD in the whole. But for individual stations, this may not be the case (and we want to know about these locations). We do perform site by site verification and use NDFD when that forecast performs better.

Turning off BestForecast can be an option. Let me talk to our developers and figure out a way to add the option. It will decreases the number of forecast fields and length of forecasts, however, since NDFD has a less complete set of forecast variables.

Apologies again for this issue,
-John

Hey John,

If the Wind issue is fixed I am personally happy with BestForecast. I would like the ability to query with PWS off and only query official weather stations such as ones at airports. I get quite a few customers who complain about bad PWS throwing disagreeing conditions. Thanks.

Hi Moshen,

We'll probably add both options (BestFct vs NWS and PWS on vs off).

The question is how to add the options to the URL. Maybe we add flags like:

/forecast/f_pws:0/f_bestfct:0

That seems a nasty syntactically though. I'll keep brainstorming with the devs here. With that said, we'll try to get this support added with 7 days.

Thanks,
John

Hi John,
Any news on the PWS on/off option?
Sorry for my impatience, but my project really needs that option :-)

I would suggest using url vars, but whatever way you guys choose would be fine. I'm just happy to have an option :)

../geolookup/conditions/forecast/q/CA/San_Francisco.json?pws=false&bestfct=true

John,

Thank you for your reply. To follow up, recently the discrepancies have only been in the winds. Four to six weeks ago, I did see a couple of temperature forecast anomalies, but I have not seen any since. For the past few days, I have been watching the BestForecast and NDFD side-by-side. If I see anything major, I'll be sure to report.

Great news about the potential new options! Thanks again for your support!

Hi John, I'm wondering if you know when these options would become available. Thanks!

My PWS (KAZPHOEN75) has forecasts that are consistently about 10 degrees higher than they should be. For instance, today had a high of 99.9 but a forcast of 109 degrees. This has been going on for some time now and makes the forcast pretty useless.

Despite the comments about "BestForecasts", is there a way to add this into my personal website as a forecast page?
Any links or codes available?

Thanks,

Altona.

Just to let you other guys know, it is now implmented, with an option /pws:0 to exclude personal weather stations.
It works like a charm.
