Grayscale map with lat lon lines for low bandwidth application

I am an offshore sailor.  We get weather data over a HF radio modem.  On a good day we see about 5k baud transfer rate, so data size is a big deal.  Our current access to satellite data requires about a 15 minute download, for an area far too big to be significant.  We get GRIB files which are great for seeing a front coming, but when setting up for the night being able to see convection cells in the local (50 nm) area would be a huge plus.

I've been playing around with the API for a few hours now and see that I can get close to my desired results, but in my perfect world I would make two changes that I haven't found switches for.

First I simply want grayscale images.  Sending color just isn't necessary, and blows up the file size.

Second an overlay of lat-lon lines would make the image much more useful.

If anyone has seen these features available here or through other API's please let me know.
