How to get the data via javascript without jQuery?

I am working on a project where I am writing an extension for Firefox. I am writing an XPCOM component in javascript. I want this component to return the weather data from weather underground in xml form.

Now, I do not have access to jQuery here, so how would I go about pulling the file down?

Moreover, where I can I find out exactly how the jQuery code example works (I am a C/C++ coder and am using this partly as an exercise to learn multiple things)?

There's a javascript/jQuery/JSON code sample here: http://www.wunderground.com/weather/a...

I know you mentioned XML, but in this example the JSON works just fine at least.
