Interpretation of prepic_1hr_in field

I'm trying to interpret the value that comes back in precip_1hr_in from a request for current conditions. If I make the API call at lets say 12:15pm , is the precipitation value calculated for 11:15am to 12:15pm? I assume so but would like to be sure. I would like to store away a rolling 24hr rain total so think I can just call for current conditions once an hour, store away the value of precip_1hr_in and sum it for a given datetime range.

Did you ever get an answer to your question? I am also in need of the same answer.

For whatever reason I decided to use precip_today_in instead ( I never got an answer to precic_1hr_in). It provides the amount of rainfall since midnight. I make the call every hour and subtract the previous amount to get basically the same answer.

Short answer, yes.

with a caution though.  Precipitation data does not come in on a perfectly regular basis, so even if you call the observations API at the same time every hour, it is possible to miss some precipitation or double up.
