keynotfound and location issues

Dear Community,

The problems you have been seeing are related to 2 different endeavors we have been working on to make the API system better and more stable.  The unfortunate result though has been errors and instability.

The first effort was updating our location database to increase the number of locations around the world that result in weather data.  While this worked well for most locations, there have been certain cities or situations that result in problems or misleading results.  Even if I don't respond to each forum thread, I read them all and bring them to the backend team work on.  Most of them we have been able to fix.

The keynotfound is happening because of moving the API traffic into our cloud service.  Because the server setup is different in the cloud than our data center, some aspects have resulted in individual machines not having the right settings.  That is why the problem is intermittent, its only a couple of machines out of many that were out of sync.  The IT team has been working on this non-stop.  We believe in the API concept of "eat your own dog food" and API problems the community experiences are the same ones the rest of our products experience.

We want to be the best weather provider we can, and each of these projects was taken on with that goal.  The result has been less than stellar though, and I am very aware of the strain it has created.  We continue to make things better, and the future is bright once we get past these hurdles.

Please feel free to add more issues to this thread if they are keynotfound or city related.  I read them all.

Thank you,
Brendan

brendan its good to see some response but the problems are wider and more frequent these days.
for example sunday 20th nov forecast api returning only 5 days ,hourly forecast api key returning errors however returned to normal following morning, historical data for year ends at nov 16th 2016 today is 21st , and all apps seemed affected .the concern here is how frequent these errors appear in recent months . you were best reliable service for PWS for along time but its slowly falling away we all accept downtime but at this rate its almost weekly. we hope all this maintenance work brings some stability in the near future.

I'm glad to finally see an official response to the issue.

I haven't seen the key issue for awhile now either but now I'm getting stale PWS data.

Good to read that someone is taking care of our problems. For my own wheatherstation IHESSENO7 the status is getting more and more worse.
  • I cannot search for it by name since Nov/1st. It can only be found by code.
  • Uploading of data is working fine all the time.
  • The Website shows the correct data.
  • The Android App shows the same garbage as received by API.
  • I'm receiving my uploaded wheather via API every 15 Minutes into my smarthome system.
  • At the moment I get only occasionally correct ansers (one every 1-3 hours).
  • For the rest I either receive old values of Kirdorf or I receive data from my own station but dated June/30th. Or it shows th "keynotfound" problem.
  • The location data shown in the API reply is somehow strange because it is sometimes "Kleiner Feldberg, taunus" and sometimes "Kirdorf". It should be "Ober-Woellstadt" or "Woellstadt".
  • As a result controlling all wheather related things within my home automation is impossible at the moment.
  • I checked this bahaviour with some wheather stations in my region and most of them show the same problems.
But now that I know that someone is working on all if these strange things I:m more or less satisfied. Thank You!

Hi Gert. I am in Canada, but have a question you may be able to help with. It looks like the snow accumulation data we are getting from the API is not consistent with the same data on WU website. For example, if the website is showing 2cm of snow, the API shows 0cm...

This is a huge issue for us because we chose WU based on the high quality (and correct) data that they show on their website. As a paid API subscriber, my assumption was that the API feed's data will be at least as good as the website, if not better.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
The data from the api calls is not reliable. That started at Nov/1, 2016! Whatever they did, the problems still occur. Sometimes it's getting better, sometimes not. Since 3 months noone can find my station by its name (which ist Ober-Woellstadt or Woellstadt. But try the code ihesseno7 and it works! But who knows the code???)
Sorry that I don*t have any better news but the api service is extremely weak at the moment compared to all the past years!

I'm seeing more or less the same issues, Gert is reporting...

I'm not getting any valid data (especially since tonight ~ 02:00 CET) from the surrounding PWS (e.g. IVATERST57, IVATERST46, IVATERST2, IVATERST14, IVATERST32, IKIRCHHE72, IPOING9). Every now and then -  once in three hours - there is indeed an estimated result, but no real data any more. Website is reporting frequent updates and correct values.

Best regards and thanks for a great service (if working (-: )

I appreciate you taking the time to address the current state of the API.

Personally, I am still seeing issues with pws:IALBERTA612 & surrounding stations. "current_observation.weather" mostly returns empty ("") or "Unknown"; once in a blue moon it gives me "Partly Cloudy" or "Snow" (though I honestly can't say I trust those readings!)

Typing that last bit has made me realize: It's a sad day when you no longer trust the current observation of one of the largest PWS-driven weather forecasting sources.

By that statement alone, it is most certainly imperative to resolve these underlying issues quickly, so that your users do not lose faith in your product.

When it comes to sources of forecasts, there are many to choose from. Less-dedicated users of your apps (those without PWS's) may jump ship quickly when confronted with this weird data; meanwhile, PWS owners and enthusiasts become frustrated when the data that they supply from their (often expensive) weather station setup appears to be being used for naught — or that the system appears unmaintained.

I am in the latter category; seeing this message helps to ease the concerns in *my* mind, but this can only last so long before the damage to the trust in your API is too much to recover from.

Since Nov 28 I do not get any valid answers on the API requests at all. Not sure whether anyone still takes care of this.
Also I still cannot find my station except by code. SINCE 5 WEEKS NOW.
I will now look for alternatives to wheather underground.

No offense to you personally, @Brenden, but Wunderground API is becoming a joke.  A quick scan of these forums shows that countless issues have been submitted over the last few weeks, and very rarely are they acknowledged by Wunderground API staff, much less fixed.  I foolishly upgraded to a weather station that would only upload to Wunderground for PWS reporting; now I can't even access my own data from the API due to empty or inconsistent API responses.

It's one thing to be a startup and have growing pains, but Wunderground's API is fairly mature and was stable.  Neither of these "migrations to the cloud" or "changes to increase location services" were communicated in advance to the users who rely on your Wunderground API.  And now that both endeavors appear to be failing or stalled, there is no support or way forward to getting things resolved.

Is there any plan to provide a direct support link other than these forums?  I've tried Twitter, email, these forums... all go unnoticed or without response.  I realize I'm using the free version, but I don't even see any type of support available for paid tiers.

I, too, am going to start looking for an alternate to Wunderground's API, and I'll be encouraging others to do so as well.

In the meantime it is really ubelievable. Nothing changes. Noone answers here.

Whatever I do, I always get a reply dated June/30 and saying, that we have +20 degees C. (it is Dec 7 and we have - 2. The app shows the same nonsence as the api.

Calling the station with the url an with its code delivers correct values. Strange.

This is a call to the wunderground people: HEEELLLLLOOOOO!

To all others: Does anyone know alternatives to wunderground?

It looks like it was a one time thing and not systemic.  The system is operating well right now, but we will keep an eye out as well.

And just to clarify, you're taking the key out of the URL when you paste it here?  And the key starts with c9c?

Hello,

there are also problems with "WUBLAST" satellite images and Wundermap satellite data that are not updated for several days (NE Caribbean but probably elsewhere) but seems to work for Africa (Meteosat)
Sorry, for my approximate English...

After 12 days receiving always the same dataset (dd/ June/30th) suddenly the API call delivers correct values. Is that a kind of christmas gift ;-)?!
Let's see how long it works and whether API delivers always(!) correct data.
Android App now also delivers correct data again.

Still open:
Location cannot be found by its name but only by code (App and url)

Merry Christmas!

Thanx for liking that ;-)
But unfortunately it still doesn't really work.
It looks as if I'm reading data from a cache that is only updated every 2 or 3 hours.
I retrieve the data every 15 Minutes. I get 8-12 times the same reply and then it changes to the actual values which I then also get 8-12 times.
So please...

I'm trying to get a new API key, but the WU website won't let me do anything nor reveal my api key until I validate my email. I've checked my spam folder and all that, but have not received the verification email. I've pushed the resend button a few times over a few days. Not the end of the world, but I'd like to get started. Thanks.

I have not been able to use the API since then it returns the same error every time.

KGAATLAN246 is experiencing this intermittently with keynotfound. When it does respond, it has stuck data points (been 58.1 for the last 15 hours).  IP for both working and failed requests is 23.217.156.187

We experienced network failures connecting (~12:38pm Eastern time/US), which resolved. However, I've reviewed our logs and seen intermittent keynotfound errors occurring today.

Hello! We are using your API for our portal and the weather for one particular location is displayed incorrectly. It is St Louis Park, MN, 55416. For some reason it is showing Ethiopia. It works the same when I search for this location on your web-site. It is a small town near Minneapolis, it is shown on google maps without any trouble but your app is not finding it. Can you please add this location to your location list ASAP! I have sent you a few requests via support and didnt get any reply. Our client is really upset! Thank you! The Case #855833. Maria
