Querying city vs PWS returns different weather data

Let's look at Wellington, CO. Here is the regular Wunderground page. If you look closely, it appears the data is being pulled from PWS KCOWELLI16 by default.

Now I try to do a 10 day hourly forecast via the API:

http://api.wunderground.com/api/my_key/hourly10day/q/co/wellington.xml

There is no "station_id" field, so I tried "conditions" instead of "hourly10day":

http://api.wunderground.com/api/my_key/conditions/q/co/wellington.xml

And indeed, this gives the station_id as KCOWELLI16. (As a side note, why is there no "station_id" for the hourly10day page?)

So out of curiosity, I did the same 10 day hourly forecast directly for that PWS:

http://api.wunderground.com/api/my_key/hourly10day/q/co/pws:KCOWELLI16.xml

This should give the same results as just searching for Wellington, CO, right? Wrong. They were different. Some fields were very different. Why would that be?
