Will existing free keys still work? And if not, when will they be turned off?

Yeah this AerisWeather.com looks like a winner for me.  I have a sprinkler system controller that currently uses the WU API to predict water demand for our vegetation.  It was hard coded into the firmware by the manufacturer which is no longer in business.  It's just a simple micro so I may see if I can change the WU calls to point to AerisWeather instead.

Will users who connect a personal weather station to your system have access to an API? These people are providing you with the data you need to run your business at their own expense, paying for weather station equipment from their own pocket. I should hope that anyone who registers a PWS is given an API key for free.

Asking because I'm currently looking at purchasing a station from Ambient Weather.

That crummy CSV file on the table view is not a good substitute for XML or JSON.
Can that file be used by third-party apps?

No surprise here with WU, and I don't believe they care about the PWS owners.  Hey, don't want to send it, no problem, they will just "take" it from those that also send it up to cwop.  The only thing they would lose would be the rapid updates.
Looked at the Aeris Weather and their site looks good, just nothing for PWS from what I saw.  If I can't find another site, I think I just dump all the uploads and setup my own page.  Not what I want to do, but I've been abused by WU far too long now!

THANKS for the info!Just setup an account with Aeris and started sending data!  KPAMINER2 will be gone on 5/24 from WU!  Enough is enough! And if you think you can still get the data from CWOP/APRS...turning that off too.

Well WU, you won the battle, for now.  Webcam gone, station gone, just what you wanted.  Sad to see what WU has become, and unfortunately, you have not learned from your mistakes in the past, so your doomed to continue to make them.  It's all about greed or shortsightedness.  You have had many PWS owners provide you data for years, that you profited from.  But now you treat them like dirt.  I don't know for certain, but I bet, no PWS owner ever got a check or even a thank you from you for providing that free data to you.  The PWS owners invested their time and dollars into purchasing, setting up and maintaining their weather stations for you, to make WU better, and to help allow you to be profitable.  It's just one thing after another that you take away from the station owner.  So what's on the chopping block next.  Is that you continue to let services fail like you are now..hoping more go away.  Or do you finally decide to turn of the web cams?  How about the free weather/no ads subscriptions you provided to owners in the past?  I'm sure someone already has that on the list.  Like other companies that lose focus of their business, their doomed to fail. or parts of the business that still have value will be sold off.  So congratulations are in order!  You have successfully pushed another PWS owner out the door!

How about fixing the obvious bugs the people are complaining about in the problems section, instead of asking for money for a service that will fail because of these bugs?

I'd love to know if they're even aware of the problem. Cause we've seen zero WU responses on any of those threads. And my own email and support ticket have gone unanswered.

Same like Murphy. We're paying them $600 a month and no reaction at all, since 10 days.

It's sad in which direction this is heading, the service and quality was a lot better some years ago when we first started using WU. Currently I'm checking out aerisweather.com as an alternative.

If or when my API key stops working, I will stop sending WU weather data, as there would no longer be any benefit for me to do so.

The responses have plainly laid out that they commercialized the service. Period.  This archaic business model is now free to go ahead and fold up.

This is a part of their current (IBM) business approach with some important "players" that make products with big investments and look to kill competition that relies on the WU service so they can be the only one that uses the WU users PWS network. This is all about money. IBM currently advertise about some hyper-local weather <- this is simply from our PWS they are using the data from... this is the perfect opportunity...

I understand things can’t be free. Testing things with an app without paying is avoiding it the cost of doing business. What I am upset with is the fact that PWS owners that upload to WU have get no credit in terms of having a preferential API that they can use for personal, non-profit uses. My use is simply to optimize my RainMachine forecast for irrigation needs of my lawn. There are no reliable data sources so my Davis station locally feeds RainMachine with my uploaded data. At the end of the day it would be nice for WU to be more transparent. What are the API numbers? How many free APIs? Maybe that would explain to the users that their model is not working.

It won't matter because people will just scrape the data anyway so what's the point of charging for it?  Answer: NONE.

In my area, Upper Austria, the iOS app does not work for now about 2 years ("Location data not available") - I also have an ad-free subscription for WU, but even with that, WU support does not answer (no responses).

I deliver PWS data, and also advertised others to buy an own PWS, deliver data to WU and therefore collect forecasts back from WU ("give-and-take"). Changing your business model to "take-and-take" will change our mood  to "don't give-don't take".

So, I have provided free, rapid-fire updates of data to WUnderground for years (PWS: KPAALBRI11), in trade for access to MY data in the API. If IBMWunderground now wants to charge me to access MY data the only option I have is to stop providing it.
I hope that if this comes to pass, all PWS owners move in this direction. There are alternatives available to us (Meteotemplate, WeeWX, etc) to run a weather site, as well as other aggregators to use APIs against.

I guess IBM wants to kill off this business unit - its hard to sell data when your data providers stop providing it for free

I could see a model where you can access your data via the API "X" times a day free and pay for other data, but this is a suicidal business model

I wonder if the "Right to be Forgotten" in the GDPR would include the deletion of ALL data that my account has uploaded ... time to talk to my GDPR folks at work

Hi John!
First it is privacy data: your data is strongly geolocalized and associated with your account.
Second, GDPR makes no difference on the data type, in case of enabling its erasing.
So, yes, GDPR fully applies. Just wait for 7 days ;)

Pierre Merci!

I got the same output from my GDPR folks... so I fully expect to request that all the data I provided over the years be purged and deleted once i finish writing my WeeWX based JSON files for my home automation system :)

I've contributed my weather data to Wunderground for 18+ years and was worried something like this would happen after the change of ownership.  Reviewing their privacy policy concerning their website and web app and now learning of the changes in the API have helped me to decide that their is too much risk and too little benefit to doing business with Wunderground anymore and so I will cut my feed immediately.  With the proliferation of IoT there are now many cloud based and in house solutions available to allow the personal use of my weather data.

Wow! Seriously? First, I will acknowledge that businesses need to make money, but it is the PWS owners like myself that are providing the data that generates income for Weather Underground. The right thing to do is to give a break to those of us that are PWS owners that are providing our data to your business free of charge!

Exactly - all PWS owners should be leaving WU and go to another service that is Open, or that provides an API at a reasonable price.  @IBM/WS - good luck selling hyper-local weather when all of the PWSs leave and you have one site per city.

A break?  You should be getting your data for FREE..... but no matter people like myself who are developers will just go to one of the other free API's.....not that difficult.

"To improve our services and enhance the relationship with our users, we will no longer  provide free weather API keys as part of our program."? What kind of idiotic statement is that. I had to laugh as it felt like an insult to my intelligence. See ya WU. You won't miss me and I won't you. Am spreading the word where I can.

Well, as a PWS "uploader" I am disgusted by this announcement. For those of us who use the API for purely amateur, personal enjoyment as opposed to commercial gain this in my opiion is down to pure greed and out of order. Like many have said, this site was built on the "generosity" of us all uploading our data, webcam views etc, all for free. If they cut disconnect my free API then I will follow suit and stop sending data. How long will it take before the general public who view the site for weather information realise it is not as good as it used to be as nobody is uploading data. That would surely sink the business. If its $850 / month for a basic API just so I can download a few radar images and a daily 10-day forecast then forget it.
To make a stand I suggest that we all stop uploading our data for 7 days (start on 1st July) as a protest and see if that has any inflluence on the decision.
I only found out about them withdrawing the free API as I came to look at my analytics which exceeded the daily limit and used up one of my raindrops. The cause - I ran a small script that says if the data you get from the forecast API is small in size because its crap, run it again until you get some decent data and it made 10 calls before it actually got a decent return.

I too would look at my stats after my 4 pm status email and noticed I could no longer log in starting yesterday.  I have two DIY devices that used my key, no commercial usage at all.  Will have to check to see if they are still functioning.  I'm setting a reminder to consider turning off my feed July 1st.

I already upload to PWS and have taken a look at the aerisweather API packages. Seems they do a free Developer API which is good for 2 months. I have emailed them explaining the situation and asking if this is a rolling 2 months of s it 2 months and you're done. The Basic API costs $25 / month. Will let you know if i hear anything back

Looks like my two DIY applications are working.  One has some intermediate errors but the framework is pretty old so it might be related but it seems to be showing the current temp and stuff.   The other app looks fine as well.  Last few queries came back fine.

So I send you data and you now charge me for an API forecast?

And this is improving service?

Somehow I think you have hung yourself

when we start to pull our data from your service your forcasts will be affected.

And Since I am in the EU I wish under GDPR law to have ALL my data you have on my website archived and sent to me. Then I request you DELETE everything associated with my account on WU.

Once you get a few thousand PWS sites doing this your name will be mud.

Well played WU, you really know how to piss people off.

Wish the people around me followed suit as I am the only one pulling data but WU is laughing itself to the bank anyway. 100's of thousands need to follow before WU will wake up and listen.
