What happened to all the BEST features of Wundermap????

Remember the days when you clicked radar and could see the storm tracks and echo top?
Remember the days Wundermap just worked as expected :)  Do we have any plans to bring back the storm track feature?  This was the best way to see predicted direction and size of storms as well the hail size and percentage.  Please bring this back!

It was always my go to during a storm.. Now it's nothing. What happened? It looks like a change was made that broke it 6 months ago and they never fixed it!

Surprisingly I got a survey from TWC the other day.  I rated it a 2 out of 10 and expressed the feelings of the great majority of us.

They have to be phone friendly to Google or they won't be listed on search. Google made those changes several years ago and all media sites changed to confirm getting ugly on computers.

What they don't realize is when watches go online the standard will be dumbed down even further to fit on the screen of a watch.  On a computer it will be ass uglier then this.   Even now most websites due to the change have a lot of white space around the text to fit the text down to phone level.  Otherwise you'd only see a few words at a time.

Once there was a time you didn't need to zoom at all unless you wanted a closer look at a hard to read word or had bad eyesight but now on a desktop no matter what OS it is or performance.etc you have to have a zoom feature to make it all fit.  I find it impossible to read most of the time unless you have it at 130 percent.  Any higher then 150 it switches to mobile mode for some reason.

This will be rather long but shows where things are heading.

Well put. I don't do what most people do on the web which is look at naughty stuff and think they are being clever. There is a LOT of educational and inspiring content to the web hidden because phone users don't do that and search engines are geared to phone users.  Therefore I'm butting heads against the crap and having to swim upstream but I figured out to do it sideways.

I have an account with newspapers.com as I have some favorite archives I love to look at historical weather scenarios (which sadly only updates the same papers over and over since the rest of the web mostly went to phones) and tried once to look at newspaper archives on a tablet using the free Google News Archives and you can only see one little area at a time. Imagine doing that on a smaller screen aka phone! I wouldn't dare as I don't own a phone for that reason. I don't wan to be stuck doing Candy Crush.

I reckon the true reason Google won't do anymore with their news archives is they don't want to get in trouble with newspapers.com and they know nobody will be able to read it on a phone nor want to so no audience there. You can still visit the existing archives. For my area the closest paper they have is Eugene Register Guard with almost a full run.   They also have Pittsburgh Post for Pittsburgh PA.    What's the closet big town/city to you?

Let's take this a step further.  How about doing it on a smart watch! REALLLLLLLLLLLLLY tiny screen if you can call it that. Everything will be Minish sized like a Minish from The Legend of Zelda Minish Cap game for the Gameboy Advance.  https://zelda.gamepedia.com/Minish I can't help but wonder if there's a bunch of those small people running the show behind dumbing down websites and computer interfaces . Quote from Zelda Pedia (Zelda Wiki version)

The Minish,[2] also known as Picori by the Hylians,[2] are a small race of people no bigger than Link's thumb that appear in The Minish CapEzlo, the talking cap, and Vaati, the main antagonist of the game, were once Minish too.

I do a lot of research history mostly old stuff and now verifying whats real in the dam news. I keep friends up on weather cause i retired and on a lot. Always let them know whats coming next week and track storms. But thanks to us no longer having the options we have to sit back and let the censor what we see read and knows coming. LOL

Mom used to use Accuweather.com as for short range forecasts they have been very accurate for our area of Oregon. When they say it will rain at 3pm it usually is only 15 mins off or if they are wrong about the rain conditions would come real close to it but the showers miss the area so they aren't too bad now for short range stuff.   Accu Weather at one time was a joke for any kind of forecasts back in the Bush/Early Obama era regardless of length.

HOWEVER last year they were pushing climate change stuff real hard and making anyone who didn't go along with it look evil and mean.  Recently though there hasn't been ONE single article about it in months.  It's more hidden in the trivia stuff which is easily ignored and the articles are about weather and science again what's actually going on. Like a recent article explains the chemistry about fireworks.   That's how it should be makes the website fun and learning again.  I guess a lot of people must've complained.

A year ago you'd be hearing "Are these early hurricanes related to climate change?"  "Is the early willdfire seasons a new normal due to climate change?" with a huge rant after you click on it and maybe one blurb about the actual hurricane or fire.

Kyle, please just. Stop. Climate change isn't a fairy tale, the world isn't just figuring out your corporate-sponsored side of reality. Scientists overwhelmingly are 'pushing climate change' because it's a hard cold fact. Go back to your conspiracy Alex Jones and MAGA old white man pages and your 'the web has dun gone to phones arrrgh get off my lawn' babble. You come across here as an old cranky kook and not adding any information of value (even anecdotally) to the discussion.

I see they broke Wundermap even further now.  Used to be able to double-click on the 'colored severe' areas on the map and it would indicate the type of weather and details of the watch or warning.. now it just zooms in.  Have tried this with Chrome, IE, and Firefox all the same.

Is there a bug section or did the person manage this sadly pass away?

The bug is called Google and it is a BAD virus to the whole web wanting everything to be phone only.  There is room for both but they prioritize phones for a long time and now stamping down hard on anything not that.

BINGO! Your almost to the truth. Keep trying!   Google wants it to be for mobile only. Google is essentially a PHONE COMPANY! They pushed Android for god knows how long and have given the PC users the middle finger then Microsoft did it and now Apple is doing it. Microsoft now owns Linux and Git Hub.  Why is it important?  Apple uses Ubuntu in their underlays which you pay for when you buy it.  Microsoft owns Linux so they essentially by default own Ubuntu which means they own Apple. Get it yet? WE ARE LOSING COMPETITION! Actually we lost.

It's all a duopoly. The Linux guy sold out and works for Microsoft now.  The first clue was when Microsoft dropped SQL and used Linux's version two yeers ago.  I mean years ago.   Microsoft has nobody really in charge just YES people in the windows department.

The copyright police DO NOT WANT US to own products which means home computers have got to be pushed to the curb and stamped down to being useless.  Most people now do social media on it or their phone.

You may know that Wunderground was purchased by weather.com which is the Weather Channel. Their website is so full of obtrusive ads and sensationalistic BS it's a wonder anyone visiting can actually find real weather happening. Wunderground was broken on purpose to drive viewers to interfaces where we can face more ads, and better their viewership revenue.

I wouldn't even mind IF they had the same features on weather.com, even with ads which they don't.  The  NEXRAD radar that showed the height of the thunderstorms, hail size, tornadoes, direction of storm cells, whether they were mesocyclones, etc. was the absolute best.  Why would they simply kill the feature that made their product unique and stand out without replacing it?  It makes no sense!   GRRRRRR..
May as well just go to my local TV station's weather online if weather.com doesn't care about the quality of their product.  I can get the same generic information locally and keep my business local if I can no longer get the features on wunderground that made their NEXRAD radar info my go-to weather.

Tom, at this rate, might it be long before they remove this chat forum?  It's unfortunate that I recently downloaded the wunderground app for Android.  I noticed a couple bugs and reported them respectfully, yet no response.  Whoevers court this ball is in is pretty piss poor.

It's hard to let wunderground just die.. as it's a go to for many.  Again, if others have a better app or weblink for what we're looking for as a replacement please post.

Gravity Traveler,  that is exactly what has happened.  The storms are not even clear anymore on weather underground.  It used to be great you could tell exactly what part of a storm you were going to get and how bad it will be.  Now it's just a joke.  I refuse to watch the weather channel or use weather.com anymore for weather.

I agree Ashling the wundermap has not worked at all for awhile now and it was always the greatest especially if a hurricane was out there. The Weather Channel is a joke. Everyone like Weather Underground until it went to the weather channel. Can wait till someone does a site with real radar. Still have not found anything close to the old site.

I only liked Wunderground.com for their almanac and history section but since their 2.0 upgrade it has become more broken with a lot of missing data. Like Redding Caliofrnia only has data to 1987 then it's hit and miss a lot mostly miss.   Red Bluff has data back to the 1930s but in the 70s has a lot of errors.

Web Cam is not what we all want we want the a map we can run the model on to make up our own mines where the storm is going. A live web cam is useless. The map was able to be zoomed in right to your road to see where the storm was going. We could go out 10 days and see. Now we know maybe 2 days at the most. Accuweather has no model to run to see the future, useless.

Now on top of everything else, my Favorite Cities isn't working right.  It keeps reverting to generic big cities like San Francisco, New York etc.  I have to keep re-setting them.  Not only that, but I was using as my location for my weather reports and airport that is 1 mile from me (KBAF station).  Now that seems to have disappeared and it defaults to a station that is missing most of the weather data.  I have to go in  and change to another weather station now practically every time I go to Wunderground.  :-(    They really messed up a good thing when they started ruining what used to be the best weather website there was.

Indeed.  Weather Underground (WU), which was considered the best weather site on the internet, seems to be an afterthought for well over a year now.  Perhaps due partly to the The Weather Channel (TWC) buy-out.

We contacted IT customer service several times early last year during the course of several months.  They responded by saying the storm tracks would return shortly, and that they were now on the mobile app, ...we couldn't find them on the mobile app.

The website continues loose functionality, much slower than before.  Every evening they appear to turn off some function until the next day.  It appears the new format is geared toward mobile use now, and not very good at it.  Like Tom mentioned, know one likes the new format, especially PC and laptop users, and it's falling on deaf ears.  I would bet they spent a considerable amount of funds changing the format, most likely attempting to be useful to both mobile "and" PC users.  Would venture to guess that endeavor has been a bit of a failure so far.

As far as being inundated with advertisements, the paid service did not have adds, and was very reasonably priced, ...less than a dollar per month with a lifetime membership available.  Also fairly easy to find a suitable ad-blocker if necessary, ...and from what I've been told, it was much needed, as the load times were way too slow, due to the overabundance of adds.

We were a paid corporate user since near the beginning, until late last year.  Our half billion dollar global aircraft management company and flight department relied on WU.  Having multiple 65" TV screens in our board rooms and flight planning rooms.  WU was always on, or the first thing up when we booted the system.  This was not unique to us, a lot of corporate users used WU.  Many very large companies we met with use to comment just how nice the WU website looked, most also became paid WU customers.

All of us enjoyed being a part of WU evolving into what it was.  Their service had incredibly well presented and useful info., especially the NEXRAD page with Doppler Radar Detected Storms, storm cell identifiers, and a grid to depict the status of the storms.  Now at the bottom of the NEXRAD page it states "There are no Doppler radar detected storms for (any area) at this time."  A very dangerous proposition if some one, or a group, were to believe this false info., as people could potentially be inadvertently put in harms way, if in the path of inclement weather.  TWC should care about this, if they really care about how weather affects people.  Certainly the advertisement revenue should be second to helping protect people and property.

After speaking with a few Emergency Weather Management Units around the country, all were in agreement, the WU NEXRAD page with storm tracking, labeling, and info. grid, was the most useful item for safely dealing with alerting people to impending bad weather.

At this time, we will attempt to contact what is left of Weather Underground, and its creators, to see if anything can be done to fix the website.  Will post an update when available.

Thank you for putting forth this effort. I was a paid member for years and am livid because of the cancellation of WU Storm. The Storm app was my 1st step in flight planning, even before beginning my flight planning in ForeFlight Mobile. I even trained my wife on using the various features of the app to keep herself and our kids safe from severe weather when I’m not home. Killing this app seems greedy and unnecessary and exactly the opposite of what the market is demanding. Because of it I am canceling my Weather Channel cable subscription. I think a weather company that irresponsibly kills a critical weather tool that many use professionally, and that favors ads over service deserves to go out of business. I’ll take my business elsewhere. Lastly, I hope the geniuses at WU are able to see and opportunity interfacing with ForeFlight in much the same way ForeFlight partnered with Jeppesen to provide access to their superior aviation charting.

From what I can tell TWC is in the process of completely shutting down WU. Almost nothing works on the Wundermap now, and a couple of days ago the WU Storm app forced users to "upgrade" to TWC's far-inferior version (which is essentially useless as a weather tool, especially for critical needs and safety planning). I certainly appreciate your efforts and hope they are successful, however I think at this point, unfortunately, WU is history. My plan at this point is to try to reach out to the WU staff, and encourage them to wait out there NDA and non-compete agreements (hopefully they're not too long, I believe most states limit them to two or three years), then, simply recreate it without TWC. I'm confident its user base was large enough that it will not only be financially feasible, but very profitable for all involved. Whatever the case, let's all keep this discussion going and aim to rally support to do something before TWC's greed (or is it just plain stupidity?) kills too many people.

TWC hated Weather Underground from the get go. I miss Storm. It was handy watching the weather close in as American Pharoah was preparing to run the second leg of the Triple Crown, having the wind tracks to show where the smoke was going to go during the wild fires, and being able to make it back to harbor before the weather got too bad. I had even gotten the marine add on. With WU you could predict the weather within a few minutes. My boss even used it to send us home just before a bad storm cell.

TWC has never been able to compete. Back to guessing I guess.

I guess their theory is 'if you can't beat them ... buy them'.  From what I remember Weatherbug wasn't able to put anything together to compete with WU.  Maybe ACCU Weather will take a look at something like WU to complement current setup.

It's called PHONES for a reason dude.  They are NOT computers despite having a processor or two.  The entire structure is way different and the mindset of the people who use a PC vs phone are way different.  Phone only users are used to not having custom control or ownership so go for being dinged for microtrans because that's all they know.   What did they do before smartphones? They pick up the dial and ring ring.  If it connects they are happy.

Home computers were trying to push that computers can do more then just work related tasks.  It can be an engaging tool and educational.  It tried from the Commodore 64 with hobbyists and Loadstar up to the early 2000s then things went to hell from there.  Now the majority of people we know and see don't even use computers anymore or have them stored in their closet and they just stream content on guess what?................................................................................................................................................................DUMB PHONES!  :)   They think they have a PC in their pocket form media bull shit which have proven to be paid and now it's all really unraveling as they are officially being questioned for decades of lies and scandals.

Except for a small but loud group of vocal indie gamers most people just want to stream and consume. There is no true Commodore 64 era of hobbyists doing things brand new from the ground up.   Raspberry is also a phone. Sure you build it yourself but it's all from existing things trying to get something that works on a PC dumbed down.  Nothing new from the ground up that is WOW or OH MY G!  HOLY S((( this is totally unique!  The Commodore had a lot of the latter but not fast enough processor (only 64K) to really take off and was ignored by media as a toy which it wasn't) Even the Amiga had a decent following but the media totally ignored it unless you really hunted.

I repeat my 'just posted' here -->" It's  my understanding that the 'New WunderMap' uses JavaScript. Firefox, which I use on my ol VISTA desktop no longer supports NAPI which was the API to JavaScript Plugins . My IE V9 doesn't work anymore either.  I switched to FIREFOX ESR 52.9(32 bit), no joy there either . No matter what I try, the result is the same 'blank baby blue field' . Sometimes it's just 'game over' :-( " Rich

Its all obvious that its the web site I honestly think the weather channel does not want is to see our future forecast, this makes us depend on them to tell us. They have not once acknowledged they even has a problem. You can pull the forecast map and see by dates, but not animated or reliable. If this map was animated it would at least help.

Unusable on my iPad. I miss the active fires overlay. On iPad, the location menu won’t collapse.

Phones don't do that and phone users are not really interested except the bare minimums. We are fighting the majority here.   See my previous posts about why phones aren't truly computers and it's all just a market BS hype which a lot of people have fallen into.  A lot but not all.    Also see my posts about why it's bad that Microsoft owns Linux and Git Hub.  It's also bad for Apple.  The latest Mint update is essentially broken if you want to run older hardware. No sound drivers and things won't play on Crossover that did before the update.

@Kyle - Though your 16 post rants after midnight make you appear crazy.  You do make one or two valid points.. that confirm you're crazy.

Thanks for the entertaining read.  You'd hate to see how many old commador's it would take to stack into today's high-end mobile PC tech - and of course the majority will adapt from rotary dialing phones to octa-core processor+ "dumbphones" dummy.  Unless you don't get out much - read a book.  You might like fantasies.

@All - Some don't like change, and that's fine for ignorants.  For the rest of us there's other weather sites out there pulling past wundergrounds failure.  Instead of complaining further about how it's broke and will never be fixed - let us use this forum to point people in the right direction of other sites that accomplish what it is we're looking for.

Ben D.,

I assure you that I for one am far from "ignorant." Perhaps with your superior intellect and knowledge, you could advise us of another weather website that provides real-time storm tracking radar with cloud height, hail size, whether the storm is a mesocyclone, tornado spinups, etc. -- as Weather Underground used to do.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I would be more than happy to make a change if someone of your great stature would tell us where such a site can be found on the internet. And I would be appreciative of such knowledge.

Zobva - I think we're on a similar page.  I've yet to come across another site offering all of what wundermap did on those topics.

Here's a few from Cameron Quasney to check on a rainy day: https://www.ranker.com/list/best-weather-sites/cameron-quasney

Ben please share if you know of any weather sites that you can predict whats coming for the 10 days at a time on Radar and not just tell me its gonna rain. I found one so far that goes out 2 days but that's it. I like seeing whats out there in the ocean. Thanks for sharing another site.

Someone else shared the 'Windy' site which predicts ~week out.. Weather.com does 10 day. Still looking for a 'complete' site that has it all..
