Where (location) is my weather history data coming from?

I am pulling down historical weather data and I've noticed that the only indication I get of where the data is from is in the METAR statements... However, I am requesting historical data by very specific Lat/Long (i.e., mm accurate). I've read on this forum that the data comes from the "nearest station" and that the METAR line will tell me where. But, if I'm allowing Personal Weather Stations for example, the METAR line certainly isn't going to tell me that.

Also, I have 2 files that I pulled down from positions with about 40km seperation, the METAR stations are the same, but there are obviously different observations otherwise ...

So, data without context is useless. How can I _actually_ know where the station for these observations is located so that I can actually make use of this data?
